For those with limited time on their hands this short trip takes in much of what southern Tasmania a Hobart have to offer with wilderness, wine, history, delicious food and beautiful accommodations. With travel times being quite short it can be based in Hobart over 5 days or stay overnight in the Huon Valley and Coal River Valley to provide travellers with unique accommodation experience outside the capital (suggested). See suggested itinerary below.

Day 1: Arrive in Hobart & Explore

Accommodation: The Old Woolstore or Hadley’s Orient Hotel (Hobart)

  • Arrival & Check-in: Settle into your hotel and freshen up after your journey. Both The Old Woolstore and Hadley’s Orient Hotel are conveniently located close to the waterfront and Salamanca precinct.

  • Salamanca Place & Battery Point: Stroll through Salamanca Place, known for its sandstone warehouses now housing cafes, galleries, and craft shops. If it’s Saturday, don’t miss the famous Salamanca Market (8:30 AM – 3:00 PM). Continue to Battery Point, a charming historic suburb with 19th-century cottages, cozy tea rooms, and boutique shops.

  • MONA (Museum of Old and New Art): Board the MONA ROMA ferry from Brooke Street Pier for a scenic 30-minute ride up the Derwent River. MONA is one of the world’s most provocative and immersive modern art museums – allow 2–3 hours to explore.

  • Waterfront Drinks: Return to Hobart and wander along the waterfront. Enjoy a local whisky tasting at Lark Distillery or a cocktail with views at The Story Bar in the MACq 01 Hotel.

  • Dinner Options:

    • Templo: Intimate, seasonal dining with a set menu of modern Australian dishes.

    • Aloft: Elevated harborside dining with a focus on local produce and Tasmanian wines.

Day 2: Bruny Island Day Trip

Accommodation: The Old Woolstore or Hadley’s Orient Hotel (Hobart) or Hunter Huon Valley

  • Morning Departure: Pick up your rental car early (or join Tassie Tours Bruny Island for a guided experience). Drive ~35 minutes to Kettering to catch the car ferry to Bruny Island (20 minutes).

  • The Neck Lookout: Climb the wooden stairs to the top for a 360-degree view of both the north and south parts of Bruny Island – a must-see photo spot.

  • Adventure Bay: Walk the Fluted Cape Track or enjoy wildlife encounters (you might spot white wallabies unique to this area).

  • South Bruny National Park: Drive down to Cape Bruny Lighthouse, the second oldest extant lighthouse tower in Australia. Short hikes here offer spectacular coastal views.

  • Foodie Stops:

    • Bruny Island Cheese & Beer Co. – Artisan cheeses and local brews.

    • Get Shucked Oysters – Fresh, farm-to-table oysters.

    • Bruny Island Honey – Tastings and sweet treats.

  • Return to Hobart (or Huon Valley): Enjoy the sunset ferry back.

  • Dinner: Casual eats and local craft beer at Waterman’s Beer Market or burgers and beer at Preachers (Hobart).

Day 3: Huon Valley – Cider & Wilderness

Accommodation: Hunter Huon Valley or Old Woolstore/Hadley's

  • Drive to Huon Valley: Head south (~40 minutes) into a region famous for orchards, wineries, and riverside scenery.

  • Willie Smith’s Apple Shed: Learn about Tasmania’s apple-growing heritage while sampling their award-winning organic cider. The café is also great for brunch.

  • Geeveston: A charming town with local art galleries and woodcraft shops. It’s also the gateway to the Hartz Mountains National Park (ideal for a short forest walk if time permits).

  • Tahune Airwalk: Walk among the treetops on a 30-meter-high canopy walkway with sweeping views of the Huon and Picton rivers.

  • Optional Detour: Drive an extra hour to Hastings Caves & Thermal Springs – enjoy a guided cave tour and a soak in the warm natural pool.

  • Evening: Return to Hunter Huon Valley for dinner and sunset drinks overlooking the valley.

Day 4: Port Arthur & Tasman Peninsula

  • Drive to Port Arthur: The scenic drive (~1.5 hrs) offers plenty of photo stops – consider Eaglehawk Neck and Pirates Bay Lookout on the way.

  • Tasman Island Cruise (Optional): A 3-hour wilderness cruise with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys to see towering sea cliffs, sea caves, dolphins, and fur seals.

Day 5: Coal River Valley – Wine & History

  • Wine & Food: Enjoy a long lunch at Pooley Wines (Italian-inspired cellar door) or Frogmore Creek, which offers sweeping vineyard views and modern Australian cuisine.

  • Evening: Return to your accommodation for a relaxed evening.

Day 6: Departure
